We’ve all been there—dragging ourselves out of bed, wondering where all our energy went, and why life feels so heavy. Burnout doesn’t arrive with a loud bang; it creeps in quietly, like a slow leak in your energy reserves. One day, you’re powering through life, and the next, you’re running on fumes. But what if I told you that burnout isn’t just a condition—it’s a math problem you can solve?
I’m here to share a simple but powerful concept with you that I call the Burnout Equation. It’s pretty straightforward: burnout happens when your energy outputs are greater than your energy inputs. In other words, you’re giving more of yourself than you’re getting back, and eventually, your body and mind will say, “Enough.” The great thing is, this equation isn’t set in stone. With a little awareness and some intentional changes, you can start to tip the balance in your favor and begin to feel like yourself again.
Energy Inputs: The Things That Fill You Up
Let’s start with the “good” side of the equation—your energy inputs. These are the things that make you feel alive and energized. The activities that light you up inside—whether it’s spending time with loved ones, engaging in a favorite hobby, or just enjoying a quiet moment of peace.
These are the things that fill your cup, so to speak.
The tricky part is that these activities often get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Life is busy, and it’s easy to feel like you’ll get to them “someday”—but that “someday” never comes.
So, here’s a thought: stop waiting for that elusive free time. Make these energy-giving activities a priority, not an afterthought. Schedule them into your day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Because the more you make these moments a part of your routine, the more you’ll find that your energy reserves are replenished.
Energy Outputs: The Drains We Often Ignore
Now, let’s talk about the flip side—your energy outputs. These are the things that drain you. The responsibilities, relationships, and tasks that leave you feeling empty. I like to call these the energy vampires. They’re sneaky, and sometimes they don’t even look like drains at first. It could be a work situation that’s not fulfilling, a relationship that’s become a source of stress, or even habits that are no longer serving you.
Identifying these drains is tough because, often, we’re so used to them that we don’t even notice the toll they’re taking on us. Ask yourself: What’s wearing me down? What’s taking more from me than I’m getting back? It could be hard to admit that certain things in your life are draining you, but it’s the first step toward reclaiming your energy. You’ve got to be brave enough to face these drains and, when possible, remove or change them.
Finding Balance: The Key to Thriving
So, what’s the key to solving this burnout equation? Balance. Life will always have its challenges, but when your energy inputs and outputs are balanced, you can handle those challenges without burning out. It’s not about eliminating all stress or discomfort—that’s impossible. But it’s about making sure you have enough energy coming in to deal with whatever’s going on around you.
Start by taking small, intentional steps. Maybe it’s blocking off time each morning for a calming ritual—like a cup of tea and a few minutes of reflection. Or maybe it’s setting boundaries at work or with loved ones to protect your energy. The important thing is that you’re being mindful of where your energy is going and making room for the things that recharge you. And don’t forget to set boundaries! Learning to say no is a superpower when it comes to protecting your energy. We often say yes to things out of obligation, but every time you say no to something that drains you, you’re saying yes to your well-being.
Why It Matters
Here’s the thing—when your energy equation is balanced, you’re not just surviving. You’re thriving. You can face the challenges of life with more clarity, resilience, and even joy. You have the energy to show up for yourself and for the people who matter most. And that, my friend, is how you overcome burnout.
So, take a moment today and evaluate your energy equation. What’s filling you up, and what’s draining you? What’s one small change you can make today to tip the balance in your favor?
Whether it’s saying “no” to something or carving out time for what fuels you, start with that first step.
You have the power to make your energy equation work for you. You can stop feeling burned out and start feeling like yourself again. So take that first step today. When you start balancing your energy, you’ll begin thriving, not just surviving. And you absolutely deserve that.
